Personality:
Overall, Alec is an introvert but as he has matured through the series and has learned to accept himself, he has become more outspoken. He is not someone who is talkative but he expresses himself when needed even though he is a quiet and shy person. When he does speak, he is straight forward and blunt, sometimes seeming rude despite his intentions. This can be tempered with a big brother kindness that makes him a peacekeeper among his group of friends.

He is someone who is extremely loyal to his siblings and friends. Alec is the protector in his family and helped raise his siblings when his parents were away because of Clave business. When hunting demons with his siblings, he would watch their backs instead of rushing into the fight. He is also the healer in the group, tending injuries and trying to reassure those he cares about.

For years, Alec kept his sexuality a secret since his parents and most Shadowhunters see being homosexual as offensive. His sister, Izzy, knew his secret and encouraged him but Alec kept to himself and did not date. During much of that time he was infatuated with his foster brother, Jace. This crush was a ‘safe’ infatuation for him since Jace had no interest in men and according to Clave Law, they could not have a relationship because they are bonded fighters called parabatia.

All of this changes when Alec meets Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Alec is hurt by a demon and nearly dies. Magnus uses his magic to save his life and stays with him throughout the night, leaving in the morning. This moment becomes a turning point in Alec’s life. The sight of Magnus at his bedside causes him to take his first steps toward the life he never thought he could have. When he’s healed, Alec goes to Magnus’ apartment, asks him out, and the pair share two kisses. That is when Alec begins to realize what attraction and love should feel like and he realizes he wants to have Magnus in his life.

The pair date in secret and it becomes clear that the pair have emotional issues to overcome. Alec sees himself as unimportant. He is surprised when people want to spend time with him on his birthday or act kindly toward him. Years of living in the shadow of his talented, attractive siblings combined with believing that he isn’t living up to his parents expectations have heart him emotionally.

At times, Alec can let his self-doubts get the better of him. This makes him prone to jealousy and after years of being ignored by others, he can feel like he is 'trivial'. Another issue causing these problems is the fact that Magnus is immortal and Alec fears that once he has died, Magnus will completely forget him. As the relationship progresses, Magnus’ immortality becomes the ‘third person’ in their relationship. There is also problems due to Magnus’ inability to open up and share the details of his past with Alec. This causes Alec’s doubts to multiply. For a time, he let these darker emotions get the better of him, resulting in a break up with his boyfriend. Since then, he has realized the consequences of his doubts and is working on dealing with these emotions.

Although he can be driven by self-doubt, he is confident in his skills as a Shadowhunter. He can seem arrogant at times because of his culture's belief in the superiority of Nephilim, but it is more of a learned trait than one than an ideal he believes in. He might say tactless things but he is one of the first Shadowhunters to out himself for being gay (something taboo in his society) and for dating a warlock (something else that is taboo in his society). Even when others from his culture would be dismissive of others who are not Shadowhunters, Alec shows kindness and compassion to those he encounters.

Despite loving deeply, Alec is self-aware enough that when he gets a chance to reunite with his boyfriend, Magnus, he doesn't automatically say yes. He loves Magnus deeply but he knows that they will keep hurting each other if they cannot work out their differences and trust each other more. Even knowing how much refusing will hurt them both since they both truly love each other, he is willing to walk away so that they will not continue along the destructive path they had been following.

When he does this, Magnus agrees to begin working things out which gives Alec a choice to have what would be a 'normal' life or rebuild his relationship with Magnus. He could settle into the type of role that is expected of a Shadowhunter, find a Nephilim guy to date since it's becoming more socially acceptable, and grow old with someone. It is something that he thought he wanted more than anything else but he realizes that he loves Magnus too much to settle for ‘normal’.

Instead, he chooses to love someone despite all the pain that might be involved in loving someone who is immortal and according to many of his peers and some members of his family, is socially unacceptable. He accepts that he will be discriminated against and his parents may never truly agree with his life choices and lives the life that he wants with Magnus.

This also shows that Alec is a young man full of contradictions. He was desperate for his parents' approval yet outed himself so that the person he loved knew his true feelings. He is a warrior who hates killing the innocent even when that death is a mercy. When he was in the middle of a battle and had to killed humans who could not be saved from the magic inflicted on them, he wept at the loss of life and over the horrors that others can commit against each other.

He can seem cool and aloof but laughs over silly songs that he hears on the subway. He can be stubborn and snarky but tries to help his sister when her heart is breaking. He will also protect those he doesn't know and ignore the rules for the greater good. Numerous times he defied the Shadowhunter's laws to help his family and outed himself in front of most of the adult Shadowhunters when he kissed his boyfriend in public so that Magnus would know his real feelings.

Alec is someone steadily learning about himself and learning to accept himself despite years of believing that there is something wrong with him. Alec is growing as a person and learning to see beyond the narrow confines he was shown as 'right'. He loves fiercely and at times, impatiently. He is loyal and shows kindness in unexpected ways, offering help to those that most Nephilim would scorn. Instead of attacking a werewolf that had changed in a night club, Alec helps her regain control.

Powers:

Nephilim or Shadowhunters, are race of individuals given special abilities by the Angel Raziel so that they can hunt demons and protect humans (Mundanes) from the supernatural. These gifts give Shadowhunters increased strength and agility, which is enhanced using magical runes called Marks that are drawn on their bodies. Some Marks are permanent and protect Shadowhunters from supernatural attacks. Others are temporary and give a Shadowhunter enhanced speed, agility, mental abilities, and healing among other traits.

Because of his permanent Marks and rituals performed on him as a child, he is immune to many types of magic and mind manipulation. Most supernatural beings cannot read his mind or bespell him with glamours.

Alec has spent the majority of his life training to hunt demons. He is well-versed in hand-to-hand combat and the use of many types of weapons. His preferred weapon is the bow and he is one of the best archers among all of the Shadowhunters. Although he had not killed a demon until he was eighteen, something unusual in his society, Alec is a skilled fighter with blades and bow. His experience with more modern weapons, such as guns, is limited since those types of weapons do not work well with the kinds of magic Nephilim use while fighting the supernatural.

Do you want a power wipe? No. I would prefer that his powers be lessened but he doesn’t completely lose the gifts he has because of being Nephilim. Since his powers are supernatural based, I believe that he’d fall under the halved power rule.
